Narishige's A-1 Muscle Fixing Apparatus facilitates insertion of a microelectrode into muscle or nerve fibers by gripping both ends of the muscle or nerve fiber and holding it under tension by stretching both ends mildly.

Normally, insertion of a microelectrode into muscle or nerve fiber is very difficult. Narishige's A-1 apparatus makes it easy by gripping both ends of the muscle or nerve fiber, stretching them and then holding the specimen under tension. Using the tweezers mounted on the ball joint, both ends of fibers of any length can be held, and moved in the Y-or Z-axis. Also attached is a stand, which allows vertical adjustment and on which the specimen is placed.

Motorized Micromanipulator as Smoothly Operable as a Hydraulic System

Narishige's EMM-3NV is an electronically-controlled motor-driven ultra-high-precision 3-axis micromanipulator. It can position itself with 0.02 micron precision, yet move a full 4 centimeters in the X, Y, and Z axes, which is about 60% more than the conventional 25mm (1 inch) working area. Developed for use in demanding applications such as electrophysiology, the EMM-3NV incorporates the smooth operability and easy-to-use vernier controls of Narishige's hydraulic systems, but adds extra precision and many useful functions not available with hydraulic micromanipulators. This motorized micromanipulator, designed for use by experienced professionals and novices alike, ensures stability, reproducibility and resistance to drift, particularly that due to temperature changes.

A fluorescent digital display provides excellent visibility. The rack-mountable power supply unit can save space near the microscope. Position readings in the X, Y, and Z axes are calibrated in microns (micrometers, µm) for ease of use.

Narishige's familiar vernier remote control knobs are employed. These control knobs are equivalent in size to those of their well-known hydraulic units, allowing the same operating feel and making it easy to make the switch to motorized control.

The compact control box is easy to position ergonomically, and enables advanced functions such as:

Electrode retraction to a home position, then return to the object of interest
Storage of, and return to, up to 5 different positions
Synthesized movement in the "T-axis" (direct movement in the axis of the electrode itself, without separate movement in the X and Z axes).

Three-Axis Water Hydraulic Fine Micromanipulator (1:1 System)

Narishige's MHW-103 is a liquid hydraulic micromanipulators developed for patch clamping generally use the 1:5 cartridge system to solve the problem of drifting. It has a wide driving range while keeping drift to a minimum. Since this can limit their driving range to as little as 2mm, customers who want a wide driving range are recommended to choose this product, which uses a 1:1 cartridge. The drum type control unit has a large handle for precise operation and high linear repeatability. The water hydraulic system is less prone to drift caused by changes in temperature than an oil hydraulic system, and is thus more suitable for patch clamping. A coarse manipulator is not mounted, so one must be purchased separately.

Narishige's MHW-3 is a water hydraulic micromanipulator specially designed for patch clamping. Its water hydraulic system has a lower coefficient of expansion than an oil hydraulic system, and allows precise movement. A 1:5 cartridge is incorporated to minimize drifting. The large, rigid driving unit enables fine movements and coarse manipulations and a sturdy ball joint is also used. Installation is made more rigid by securing attachments to the bar. The drum type control unit has a large handle for precise operation and high linear repeatability. Overall, design considerations are focused on precision movement and stability over long periods of time. This model set the standards for subsequent models of micromanipulators for patch clamping.

Narishige's MM-3 is amongst the most popular three axis coarse/fine compact micromanipulator. Its smooth drive and stable controls have made the MM-3 a classic and popular micromanipulator for decades. Single-axis fine movement in the same direction as the microelectrode or needle provides a high level of control when approaching a specimen. The three-axes of coarse movement operate via strudy rack & pinion mechanisms, enabling the microelectrode or needle to be placed near the specimen quickly.

Handles on both sides of the X- and Z-axis make this equipment suitable for both left- and right-handed operators, and a tension adjustment is also available to prevent the unit from dropping under its own weight. If used properly, this model's smoothness and stability will remain unchanged even over several decades of use.

microMAGNIPULATOR® X-Y-Z Gliding Micropositioner

At last there is a versatile micromanipulator for under $1000! The microMAGNIPULATOR® uses the same principle as our GlideStage® to allow you to accurately position your needle for microinjection. The surfaces of both the sliding needle positioner and glide base are teflon coated for smooth movement, and held together by a powerful, adjustable magnet capable of pulling with over 100 pounds of force.

The glide base is a 4" solid steel cube that weighs 20 pounds. Its mass and no-slip elastomeric feet help to dampen vibrations. X-Y control in the 10 micron range is accomplished either by pushing the sliding needle positioner directly with your hand, or via threaded push bolts. Z control is accomplished using a fine threaded adjustment knob. Over 3 cm of X and Y movement and over 1 cm of Z movement are possible.

The verstile needle positioning stand can be user-configured in a variety of ways to hold your needle at the height and angle you prefer. And, what goes between the Tritech Research microINJECTOR™ and microMAGNIPULATOR (or anybody else's microinjection/micromanipulation system, for that matter)? Narishige's MMO-220A is a one-dimensional oil hydraulic micromanipulator that adds fine movement capability in the same direction as the pipette.

When using this unit to insert a pipette into the cell, operators can make further movement along the axis of the pipette, which minimizes the chance of damaging the cell. This single-axis oil hydraulic micromanipulator is typically use as an add-on manipulator. The compact drive unit is installed on the tip of a ball joint, adding the same high precision as a general oil hydraulic micromanipulator. The MMO-220A uses a standard drum and can be combined with any kind of three-dimensional manipulator, including lower-cost mechanical units.

Cap For Ultracompact Manipulator

Narishige's MO-95 is a remote-controlled oil-hydraulic micromanipulator for chronic experiments on the skulls of middle size animals, mainly monkeys. Employment of the oil hydraulic system enables microelectrodes to be inserted by remote control, without vibration. The chamber method is used, so that slight movements by the subject animal will not dislodge the microelectrode, while attachment/ detachment can be done freely. The acrylic XY stage makes it easy to position the microelectrodes with great accuracy while visually confirming their location. Microelectrodes ranging from 0.3 to 2mm can be used, by adjusting the positions of the packing and the microelectrodes themselves. Since this model uses the microelectrode expose method, any kind of microelectrode can be used. When the chain bar is filled with Ringer's solution, brain activity stops and long time recording becomes possible.

The MO-952 combines the hydraulic MO-95 micromanipulator (equipped with a chamber, X-Y stage and oil hydraulic drive) with the DM stepping motor driver and control system so that positioning can be controlled with even greater precision. Accurate, vibration-free electrode insertion is achieved, by remote control, within a 10mm working distance. The stage (of the Drive Unit) and the mounting chamber can be detached and removed separately.

The drive stage allows for mechanical micromanipulation in the X and Y axes (18mm movement) and the Z axis (50mm movement). The motor-controlled fine hydraulic-driven Z axis allows for extremely precise positioning over a 10mm range.

Narishige's MWS-31 is a one-axis water hydraulic micromanipulator combined with a three-dimensional manual coarse manipulator for patch clamping applications under low magnifications, such as when using a stereo microscope. Even at low magnifications, vibration is a critical problem, so a large and rigid manual manipulator is used to prevent it. The rotation mechanism makes exchanging pipettes easier, and the water hydraulic 1:5 cartridge system enables more stable and precise operation. An angle adjustment mechanism is equipped on the fine movement section so that an angle can be added for the fine movement section only, while coarse section retains its vertical position. This allows the manipulator angle to be changed between horizontal and vertical while the manipulator itself remains firmly fixed in position.

Narishige's MWS-32 combines a magnetic stand with the MWS-31, so that it can be used independently. Direct attachment to the magnetic stand provides enhanced stability required for applications with stereo microscopes. Like MWS-31, MWS-32 also has a water hydraulic 1:5 cartridge system, angle adjustment mechanism for firm fixing, and a rigid manual coarse manipulator. A unique feature of MWS-32 is that the manipulator is fixed directly to a rigid magnetic stand, thereby making the vertical adjustments more stable. This integration of the magnetic stand allows independent use in a variety of applications by freeing the manipulator from a stereomicroscope.

Coarse and fine movements can be performed for each axis and fine control with 1um minimum gradations is possible. Incorporation of a rotation mechanism makes it easy to attach and detach microelectrodes.

Three-Axis Coarse/Fine Micromanipulator with Tilting Stand for More Convenient Patch Clamping

Narishige's MX-2 is a three-axis coarse/fine micromanipulator comprised of the MX-1 and an attached TM-1 tilting stand, for easier and more convenient patch clamping. Its unique structure prevents hand jitters passing to the tip of the microelectrode, and obviates concerns about drifting caused by temperature fluctuations. The tilting stand offers outstanding stability and allows the manipulator to be set at any angle for easier approach to the specimen. Furthermore, it enables the manipulator to move horizontally as well as vertically in line with the microelectrode. The stand has a magnetic base, so (as long as an iron plate is used) installation is possible even when no screw holes are provided. Three-Axis Coarse/Fine Manual Micromanipulator

Narishige's NMN-21 is a manually operated micromanipulator which minimizes jitter for simplicity and high performance.

Drift and electromagnetic disturbance are critical problems in patch clamping work. This mechanical micromanipulator was developed specifically for patch clamping: it does not employ a liquid hydraulic system (which is prone to drift caused by temperature changes), has no springs (a common cause of mechanical drift), nor a motor (which can be a source of electrical noise). Its body is designed to absorb vibrations, so that even at high magnifications, problems of jittering are virtually non-existant. The NMN-21 is based on a drum type design and utilizes pairs of sliders for each axis that serve to isolate vibrations caused then a user touches the control knobs from the movement of the device. High mass and a low center of gravity provide exceptionally steady and stable performance. The overall design is compact, so installation requires a minimum of space. With coarse and fine manipulators integrated into the compact body, this model handles a full range of required motions, from moving a microelectrode into the microscope field of view to making delicate contact with cells.

Narishige's WR-6 is a three-axis water hydraulic micromanipulator that is highly recommended for patch clamping from the microscope stage slide.

Employing a water hydraulic system, which has a lower coefficient of expansion due to temperature changes, this model offers precise movement while minimizing drift by incorporating a 1:5 cartridge. In addition, it integrates both coarse and fine manipulation capabilities by featuring a manual coarse manipulator for each axis. The drum type control unit has a large handle for precise operation and high linear repeatability. Design considerations are focused on precision movement and stability over long periods of time. The WR-6 is outstandingly versatile: when set up, it is attached using a bar mount, but independent setup using a magnetic stand is also possible, as is attachment to the side of the microscope stage with an adaptor.
