Scientist Profile: Dr. Richard Axel

Dr. Axel's research is focused on the biology of olfaction.  His lab demonstrated that about 1000 distinct scent-responsive neuron types each express a single odorant receptor.  They showed that these neurons are distributed randomly in the nasal epithelium, yet axons from each subtype find the same location in the brain's olfactory bulb, establishing a physical map of smell.  Drosophila and mammalian studies are in progress.  [More...]
