Scientist Profile: Dr. Leslie Vosshall

Dr. Vosshall's lab studies the cell and molecular biology of olfaction.   Recent experiments demonstrate that different olfactory responses to chemical odorants like androstenone are strongly influenced by a person's genetic makeup.  Other experiments show that odorant molecules are detected in insects by transmembrane receptors that seem to function as ion channels (vs. G protein-coupled receptors in mammals) and that the insect repellent DEET works by blocking the Or83b receptor...   [More...]
