The stereomicroscope is available with fiber-optic illumination upgrade options. Fiber-optics can deliver very bright white sustained illumination with much less heat to your sample than that imparted by standard illumination. One fiber-optic upgrade includes a special base with an adjustable frosted mirror for greater control of transillumination, a bendable fiber-optic light pipe, and a super-bright remote light source. The stereomicroscope is also available with a mirror transillumination base upgrade which features a frosted mirror on one side and a shiny mirror on the other. The base can be used as is with the fiber-optic illumination upgrade or as a part of the mirror transillumination base with LED transilluminator upgrade. This upgrade uses our own built-in LED illuminator that costs less than a fiber-optic illuminator, can get just as bright, is the same white color at all brightnesses, and has a 40,000 hour bulb life vs. about 1,000 hours for the halogen fiber optic units.

This system meets all of your dissecting microscope needs. The magnification changer ring allows you to switch between 6x, 12x, 25x, and 50x magnification of the eyepiece/objective combination with the turn of your fingers. The lenses are ground and mounted so precisely that it is seldom necessary to re-focus when switching from one magnification to another. Illumination from above is ideal for microsurgery, dissection, insect (Drosophila) and plant (Arabidopsis) genetics, while illumination from below is ideal for Nematode (C. elegans) and fungal (Saccharomyces, Neurospora, etc.) genetics and micromanipulation.

FAQ's

Q: What is the difference between the Trinocular C and T mounts?
A: The T-mount is for a regular SLR camera (such as the ones photographers use) and also needs a brand-specific adapter for the camera. The C-mount is a standard threaded mount for microscope cameras that do not have their own lenses. The image is projected directly on the camera's sensor chip. The idea is to match the de-magnification so that the image just covers the chip. For example, a 0.35x C-mount adapter is good for a camera with a chip size of 0.25-0.50 inch diameter, and a 1x C-mount adapter is good for a camera with a chip size of 1 inch diameter.

Q: How does the light source get divided between the binoculars and the 3rd lens in trinocular adapters?
A: The trinocular adapter works by taking all of the light that normally goes to the left eyepiece and reflecting it up into the C-mount adapter/camera. It has two controls- one that redirects the left optical path and one that is a diaphragm that allows the user to reduce the amount of light going to the camera and eyepieces, which slightly increases the sharpness.

Q: Which type of eye piece and objective combination is recommended for C. elegans versus other types of research?
A: For C. elegans work, we would recommend the 10x eyepiece as the standard with the 1.5x objective as it increases the magnification range of the scope from 6 - 50x up to 9 - 75x and reduces the depth of field. However, the 0.5x objective is good for behavioral studies where you need to image the entire plate in one field of view at 3x. So, it depends on your application which is more useful. You can also get one of each if needed.
We recommend either the 10x or 20x eyepieces for research work with eggs.

Q: The microscope will not turn on. Is the issue with the microscope bulb and will a replacement bulb solve the problem?
A: We are pretty sure the problem is not the LED. Please double-check that:
1) The power supply is plugged in to a good outlet. (you will notice it has a little green LED on it).
2) Please double-check that the main power switch (on the left side, as you are sitting in front of the microscope, reaching back) and the transilluminator power switch, on the right side, are both in the on (1) positions. (There are 3 total switches on the back).
3) Make sure that the brightness control, (the big wheel on the right side of the base) is not set to the lowest position, where the light is off).

Q: My SMT1 scope is having trouble staying in focus. How can I adjust the focusing knob to stay in place?
A: When you got the scope, it should have included a c-wrench. The little pin inserts into any one of the several holes on the silver rings just proximal to the focus knobs. By turning the rings with the holes clockwise (when facing the focusing knobs) it increases the tension. It is best to adjust both sides a little instead of one side a lot. Find the point where it no longer slides when you push down on the scope by hand, but still moves easily when turning the knobs.

Q: What is the purpose of the black ring and where does it go on the SMT1 scope?
A: It's supposed to go under the frosted glass plate to make a nice circle where the illumination is even, but all it does is block the light that is not in the circle. However, we personally suggest to leave it out.

For several years, our customers, impressed by the excellent optics and great price of our SMT1 Dissecting Stereomicroscopes, have been asking for a Fluorescence Dissecting Scope in the same vein of quality and economy.  After lots of research and development, recently presented at the International C. elegans Meeting, the result is the SMT1-FL. Note: for our new ultra-high performance multi-fluorophore dissecting scope, check out the SMT1-FL-QC!

The microscope is available with a few different options for the base/stand and illumination. Fluorescence illumination is always from the top, and we have options that allow for different types of standard white-light illumination of your specimens. For top lighting, select our standard "ergonomic" base and add our dual goose-neck LED illuminator. For transillumination (through the sample), you can use our standard "ergonomic" base with frosted glass plate and built-in fixed LED illumination of ∼30mm in diameter. For an upgraded transillumination option, select our taller, narrower, triangular transillumination base with a large rotatable and translatable mirror. This upgraded base employs a larger frosted mirror and clear glass plate. Moving the diffusion farther from the specimen increases contrast and resolution. The larger mirror can illuminate a sample ∼50mm in diameter, and changing its angle and position allows for optimal contrast to visualize internal structures (for example structures within the C. elegans pharynx and embryos, or within internal organs of Zebrafish, Xenopus, chick and mammalian embryos). An optional foot pedal allows for the white illumination to be flashed on as needed to orient samples without moving your hands or losing your dark-adapted vision.

4 quick-change LED fluorescence modules

How does it work?

First, we replaced the expensive mercury arc lamp, power supply, and bulbs that cost about $200 and last only 200 hours with super-bright, energy-effcient LEDs that last about 40,000 hours. We've sourced the brightest LEDs in the world, and designed optics to harvest almost every photon relevant to exciting your fluorescent samples.

Our modules employ two excitation beams that intersect in the focal plane of your specimen. This doubles the signal without doubling the background fluorescence* (Pats. Pending). Each compact, interchangeable module uses the finest dichroic filters to refine the excitation and emission wavelengths for bright, clean imaging and a powerful magnetic system for easy, tool-free installation and changing of configuration to suit any single, double, or triple labeled experiment.

While playing with the magnets above, we invented a slider system uses magnetic detents (Pats. Pending) for robust, wear-free operation. A single sliding operation precisely positions the excitation and emission filters, and energizes the module.

Q: On the SMT1-FL-QC I noticed that there is a partial occlusion of the field of view in the left eyepiece (like a mild waning gibbous moon). This only is visible at 6x magnification - I can see the whole field clearly at higher magnifications. Why is this?
A: The module is the whole unit with the colored emission filter holder plus the dual excitation light source. But technically, the part than may be twisted or jacked up/down is the black box containing the dual excitation light source, relative to the colored emission filter holder. The illuminated spot is purposely smaller than the 6x field of view. At 12x, the edges are a little dimmer, and at 25x + the field should be fully illuminated. The best, brightest images will be seen at 12x and 25x. Hopefully the modules were still aimed perfectly when they arrived. If you're careful when you install and remove them, you won't have to re-aim anything. Sometimes the "slider holder" (the black part under the objective that the slider slides through) can shift in angle if someone pulls down on one side of the slider. In that case both modules will still illuminate the same spot, but it will be off-center.... and then you should fix the slider-holder instead of aligning the modules.
Perhpas you are not referring to the portion of the 6x field of view that is illuminated by the converging beams, but instead you are referring to the entire field of view (for example what you see when the sample is illuminated from the bottom. If that is the case, it sounds like the slider is just not exactly stopped in the center of its magnetic detent. Try manually sliding the slider left and right while looking through the scope and see if you can get rid of the gibbous.
